Drug overdose is the leading cause of death in America in individuals under the age of 45. The number of individuals dying of drug and substance abuse has been steadily rising over the last several years while access to illegal drugs in our communities has also been increasing. We have also seen the legalization of marijuana in twenty-three states – along with Washington, D.C. and Guam.  

Facts*

  • Accidental drug overdose is a leading cause of death among persons under the age of 45.
  • Over 70,000 drug overdose deaths occur in the US annually.
  • The number of overdose deaths increases at an annual rate of 4.0%.
  • Drug overdose deaths in the US since 2000 are nearing one million.
  • Half of people 12 and older have used illicit drugs at least once.
  • 20.4% of Americans over the age of 12 have an alcohol use disorder.
  • Drug use is highest among persons between the ages of 18-25 at 39% compared to persons aged 26-29, at 34%.

Prayer Points

  • Pray that God will lead individuals dealing with substance abuse problems and addictions to seek help.
  • Pray that God will free individuals from drug and substance abuse addictions.
  • Pray that our youth will turn to God for purpose and meaning in their life and turn away from addictive substances.
  • Pray that those dealing with emotional and physical pain will find comfort in a relationship with Jesus and not use addictive substances to self-medicate.
  • Pray that God will raise of Godly individuals to counsel and care for those dealing with substance abuse addictions.
  • Pray that movements to legalize drugs across our country will be unsuccessful.
